Artist Statement
My work is informed by the landscape of fragmentation. I start with chance marks and then continue with intentional drawing, repetition and a combination of materials. I piece together fragments, line, marks, image. It is a process – the connecting of disparate parts. It is like filling in an incomplete narrative. It is like mending a pot. It is like making whole what is not whole at all.
I work only on paper. It might seem fragile but it can be torn, bent, made wet and still, it survives…like us.
As a visual artist who is also a poet, distillation is essential to me. A word in a poem, an image on paper can suggest an entire narrative.
The monotype/diptych “An Exchange of Souls…” is a response to the final verse of my poem by the same title.
