Sprays, Dusts and Aerosols:
A Chemical Revolution
APR 18 – JUN 1
Reception April 18, 7 - 9 PM
In this exhibition, sculptor David D’Orio and printmaker Nils Henrik Sundqvist present an alternative version of the world of pesticides and the effects of their usage. Combining mixed media sculpture and printmaking techniques the artists join forces to create a body of collaborative works that explore their ideas about pesticides, our attempts to control nature, and the effects of those attempts. Using the objects of the trade as symbols and metaphors, the artists make use of repetition and unexpected materials and techniques to make powerful points regarding this important debate.

Ousia: Drawings by Rula Jones
APR 18 – JUN 1
Reception April 18, 7 - 9 PM
This exhibition, entitled Ousia, consists of a semi-surreal, autobiographi- cal series of portrait drawings executed in pencil. Delicately and sensi- tively rendered, the drawings spring from a time of both actual and metaphysical genesis in the artist’s life, created during her pregnancy and after the recent birth of her daughter. Jones combines the figurative with imagery from nature, using this as a metaphor for this very per- sonal, yet universal narrative. Her multicultural and international back- ground informs the strong emphasis on humanism in these works as well, as she brings the depth and breadth of her experiences to bear in these quietly active drawings.

Industrial Paradise: Works by
Jessica van Brakle
APR 18 – JUN 1
Reception April 18, 7 - 9 PM
Jessica van Brakle’s work combines painting and drawing, depict- ing far-off or obstructed voyeuristic perspectives of landscapes comprised of tropical foliage and man-made structures. Seemingly straightforward, the tension in van Brakle’s imagery lies just beneath the surface. Her work presents conflicting, contrast- ing, and yet coexisting notions of harmony, permanence, strength and ecology as it examines the complex relationship between man and nature. Creating a visual dichotomy between occupied and empty space, dystopian aspects are revealed as the focus shifts between positive and negative space and from foreground to background.
